🔹 About DIN 1.4547 (254 SMO)

DIN 1.4547, also known as 254 SMO / UNS S31254 / F44, is a high-alloy austenitic stainless steel developed for extremely aggressive environments, especially halide-containing solutions and seawater.

  • Very high resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion

  • Excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking

  • Superior strength due to nitrogen content

  • Non-magnetic in the annealed condition

  • Good ductility and weldability

🔹 International Equivalents

  • EN/DIN: 1.4547 – X1CrNiMoCuN20-18-7

  • UNS (USA): S31254

  • AISI / ASTM: 254 SMO

  • Trade Name: F44

🔹 Chemical Composition (Typical %)

C Cr Ni Mo N Cu
0.0120.018.06.10.200.70

🔹 Mechanical Properties (Solution Annealed)

  • Tensile Strength (Rm): 650–850 MPa

  • Yield Strength (Rp0.2): ≥ 300 MPa

  • Yield Strength (Rp1.0): ≥ 340 MPa

  • Elongation (A5): ≥ 35%

  • Impact Energy (20 °C): ≥ 100 J

  • Hardness: ≤ 260 HB

🔹 Physical Properties

  • Density: 8.0 g/cm³

  • Elastic Modulus (20 °C): 200 GPa

  • Thermal Expansion (20–400 °C): 16–17 ×10⁻⁶/K

  • Thermal Conductivity (20 °C): 13 W/m·K

  • Specific Heat (20 °C): 500 J/kg·K

  • Electrical Resistivity (20 °C): 0.85 Ω·mm²/m

🔹 Heat Treatment

  • Solution Annealing: 1140–1200 °C, rapid cooling in air/water

  • Stress Relief Annealing: Max 500 °C (up to 5h)

  • Cannot be hardened by heat treatment (only by cold working)

🔹 Fabrication & Welding

  • Hot Forming: 1200–950 °C

  • Cold Forming: Easily formable, but work-hardens quickly

  • Welding: Good weldability; avoid TIG welding without filler due to loss of corrosion resistance

  • Recommended Filler Metals: High-alloy types (e.g., Avesta P12, P16)

  • Surface Finish: Available pickled, machined, or peeled

🔹 Standards

  • EN 10272: Stainless steel bars for pressure purposes

  • EN 10088-3: Stainless steels – technical delivery for bars, rods, and sections

  • ASTM A182 / ASME SA182: Forged flanges and fittings

  • ASTM A240 / ASME SA240: Plates and sheets

  • ASTM A312 / ASME SA312: Pipes and tubes

  • ASTM A276 / A479: Bars for pressure vessels and general purposes

🔹 Applications

  • Seawater desalination systems

  • Offshore oil & gas platforms

  • Chemical and petrochemical plants

  • Flue gas desulfurization systems

  • Pulp and paper industry

  • Shipbuilding and marine scrubbers

  • Heat exchangers and pressure vessels
